DAUGHTERS OF AMERICAN REVOLUTION

On October 11, 1890, at a period when there was a resurgence of patriotism and a great deal of interest in the founding of the United States of America, the Nationwide Association Daughters of the American Revolution was established. Women felt a need to demonstrate their patriotism and were upset by their omission from the male groups created to honor the legacy of the forefathers who struggled to establish our nation’s independence. The Daughters of the American Revolution, which was founded by a group of trailblazing women in the nation’s capital, has since waved the flag of patriotism.

In its 125 years of extensive service to the country, the DAR has maintained the goals set forth at its first meeting. Historical: To preserve the history and spirit of the people who worked to bring about American independence; Patriotic – to cherish, preserve, and extend the organizations of American freedom, to nurture a love of country and love of country, and to help secure for human civilization all the blessings of liberty. Educational – to carry out Washington’s directive in his final speech to the American people, “to enhance, as an object of prime significance, institutions for the overall dissemination of knowledge, thus working to develop an enlightened public opinion. More than 950,000 people have joined DAR since it was founded in 1890.

DAR members donate over a million dollars annually and millions of hours of service to their local communities, including helping veterans and active duty military personnel, giving away thousands of dollars in financial aid and scholarships each year, and continuing to support schools for underprivileged children.

DAR, is one of the most diverse genealogical organizations in the nation, with 190,000 members spread across 3,000 chapters in the US and abroad. Any woman who can demonstrate lineal heritage from an American Revolutionary War hero and is at least 18 years old and of any race, religion, or ethnicity is eligible to be part of this group.
