According to the 2022 QS World University Rankings and the Times Higher Education rankings, ANU is one of the top universities in the world and is ranked first in Australia and the Southern Hemisphere.

It is ranked 27th in the world among universities according to the 2022 QS World University Rankings.

ANU is the only university that was established by the Australian Parliament; it was founded in 1946. It can be traced back to Canberra University College, which opened its doors in 1929 and joined ANU in 1960. ANU has 3,753 staff members and 10,052 undergraduate and 10,840 graduate students enrolled. As of 2018, the university’s endowment was A$1.8 billion.

Six Nobel laureates and 49 Rhodes scholars are among the teachers and former students at ANU. More than a dozen current Australian government department heads and two prime ministers are graduates of the university. ANU Press online has access to the most recent editions of the university’s scholarly publications.

In Australia, calls for the creation of a national university date back to 1900. The land was set aside for the university at the base of Black Mountain in the city plans by Walter Burley Griffin when the location of the country’s capital, Canberra, was decided in 1908. World War II interrupted the planning for the institution, but it was restarted with the establishment of the Department of Post-War Reconstruction in 1942, which ultimately resulted in the Chifley Government’s adoption of the Australian National University Act 1946 on 1 August 1946.

A number of distinguished Australian academics, including Sir Howard Florey, a co-discoverer of medicinal penicillin, Sir Mark Oliphant, a nuclear physicist who participated in the Manhattan Project, and Sir Keith Hancock, returned from abroad to join the institution (the Chichele Professor of Economic History at Oxford). A New Zealander named Sir Raymond Firth, an anthropology professor at LSE who had previously lived and worked for a while in Australia, was also a member of the group. Former Prime Minister Stanley Bruce served as the first Chancellor of the ANU, and economist Sir Douglas Copland served as the first Vice-Chancellor. The John Curtin School of Medical Research, the Research Schools of Physical Sciences, Social Sciences, and Pacific Studies, and ANU were initially divided into these four centers.

For professors and graduate students, University House was the first residence hall to open its doors. The federal government founded Mount Stromlo Observatory in 1924, and ANU acquired it in 1957. The Menzies and Chifley buildings, which housed the ANU Library’s inaugural sites, were inaugurated in 1963. Since 1927, the Australian Forestry School has been in Canberra; in 1965, ANU merged with it.
