The Charles Bullard’s “Forest Research” Scholarship

The Charles Bullard scholarship program supports advanced research and study by people who have the potential to significantly advance the fields of forestry and forest-related fields, such as biology, earth sciences, economics, politics, administration, philosophy, humanities, the arts, or law, either as researchers or administrators.

Only 5 to 7 recipients of the Scholarship are chosen annually from a huge pool of applicants because it is a very competitive program.

Applications for fellowship positions in 2023–2024 are accepted from August 1–October 1, 2022.

Qualifications

Bullard Scholarships are typically given to people in the middle of their careers who have made a name for themselves in academia, government, or business. Priority is typically given to those with doctoral degrees in academic careers, but other individuals whose projects show promise of making significant contributions to forestry and forest studies, broadly defined, will be taken into consideration in light of the likelihood that study and research at Harvard will assist in fulfilling this promise. The Committee’s conclusions are generally based on the standard of the applicant’s academic performance, professional accomplishments, and possible advantages from engagement with the Harvard Forest community and its institutional resources.

Please be aware that this is not a post-doctoral program and that Bullard Fellowship applicants should not typically be recent PhD grads.

Stipends

The stipends for the fellowships range up to $60,000; the sum of each award is determined by the length of the fellowship. The prize might be paid to the fellow individually or to their employer at the fellow’s request.

In most cases, the stipend will serve as a supplement to income received in exchange for devoting a time period to research, such as sabbatical pay for academic employees, federally funded training appointments for employees of the federal government, or paid educational leave for employees of the private sector. Fellowships are not meant to cover a sizable portion of the cost of original research.

Travel Compensation

Each Bullard Fellow will receive reimbursement for one round-trip flight between their home base and the Fellowship site. The lower of the actual airfare or mileage (calculated at an IRS-determined rate) between the two will be reimbursed. Bullards shall pay the expenses of any anyone accompanying them.

Budget For Supplies

Each Fellow award comes with $500 toward supplies needed for their Bullard Fellowship projects.

Duration

After September 1, fellowships may begin at any moment. Fellowships normally last between six and twelve months.

The application calls for

• A finished online application form

• The names and contact details of three references who can comment on the applicant’s proposed program and their abilities (both personally and professionally) to carry it out. By October 15, 2022, recommenders must submit their recommendation letters for the 2023–2024 program through the safe online application system (a 2-week grace period post-deadline).

• A research statement outlining the applicant’s current professional trajectory, suggesting a Harvard research program, and assessing the program’s possible impact on the applicant’s future professional trajectory (5 page single spaced maximum is requested).

• A five-page maximum CV that includes the following:

  • Dates of attendance and degrees attained at colleges and institutions
  • Positions held in professional fields since college graduation
  • Any academic awards and honors
  • Important works, essays, studies, etc.
  • Prominent outreach and education initiatives (referred to by NSF as “synergistic activities”)
  • Artists should include a link to their online portfolio.

Application and supporting documentation are due on October 1, 2022 at 5 p.m. EST for the 2023–2024 program. Up to October 15 at Midnight EST, references will be considered. Candidates that are chosen will be contacted by no later than December 1.

Please send an email to [email protected] for more details.

Fellowship Place

As a residential program, the Bullard Fellowship requires Fellows to spend a significant amount of their time at either Harvard Forest near Petersham, Massachusetts, or Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Bullards should include information in their application if they anticipate traveling for longer than a week or two during their Fellowship.

A range of tools will be made available to fellows based in Harvard Forest to help them with their fellowship work, including:

  • Research Resources: free office space, local phone service, basic office supplies, library, archives, and weekly lectures and lab groups (September through April).
  • Housing: Bullards who live in The Forest can rent furnished apartments with one to five bedrooms for $900 to $1,600 per month.
  • Local Transport: Harvard Forest is a remote location. Bullards need their own automobile for transit because there is no local public transportation. The price of getting a car includes insurance ($750–$1,500 per year), the car itself ($5,000+), maintenance, and gas. Bullards are expected to buy their own transportation.
