Kowloon, Hong Kong’s City University of Hong Kong (CityU) is a public research university. In 1984, it was established as City Polytechnic of Hong Kong, and in 1994, it received full university accreditation.

Along with the Chow Yei Ching School of Graduate Studies, CityU Shenzhen Research Institute, and Hong Kong Institute for Advanced Study, the university has nine main schools that provide courses in business, science, engineering, liberal arts, social sciences, law, and veterinary medicine.

Mission

A premier location for legal research and instruction is CityU School of Law. The Law School’s educational purpose is to offer a comprehensive, intellectually demanding, and socially conscious education that cultivates doers and thinkers to make meaningful contributions to society. The Law School’s academic and research purpose is to innovate through interdisciplinary legal studies in order to address the complex societal problems that face communities. Such a mission is not carried out in isolation, but rather in cooperation with international organizations, public and private organizations, and governments.

About The Scholarship

The CityU Scholarship is open to interested undergraduate law students willing to further their education.

Education and Learning

Graduates of the CityU School of Law will:

• Possess the ability to think creatively and innovatively;

• Exercise introspective, analytical, and critical thought;

• Understand how legal systems are influenced by and reflect historical, economic, social, philosophical, and cultural circumstances and ideals;

• Recognize the boundaries and social circumstances of the law;

• Always be learning

• Act as role models who put their legal expertise to use for the good of their communities.

Research

The goals of CityU School of Law are

• Encourage and uphold a diverse research culture that welcomes a range of legal perspectives, including theoretical and empirical, doctrinal and interdisciplinary, as well as national, comparative, and international law;

• Examine the relationship between law and society using viewpoints from different areas of study;

• A deeper comprehension of common law and comparative legal studies, especially in Asia and with a concentration on Chinese law; and

• Offer answers to society’s most pressing and difficult problems.

1. Each academic year may only have a total of two scholarships awarded. Each winner will get an HK $50,000 scholarship. The recipients of the scholarship will receive payment in two installments, during Semester A of Years One and Two, respectively.

2. All full-time applicants for the Juris Doctorate program, both domestic and foreign, are eligible to apply for the Scholarship.

3. After reviewing the applications, a Selection Committee will decide whether to award the Scholarship.

4. Relevant elements, including the applicant’s academic accomplishments (i.e., performance on an undergraduate degree and/or a postgraduate degree), will be taken into account in the selection of beneficiaries.

Scholarship for Master of Laws Program Admission to Law School

Regulations

For the new intakes of the Master of Laws (LLM) program, including the Chinese and Comparative Law Stream, International Economic Law Stream, Common Law Stream, Intellectual Property and Technology Law Stream, Corporate and Financial Law Stream, and General Stream, CityU School of Law has established a scholarship from the Non-UGC Reserves. For new admissions beginning in 2022–23, the ensuing restrictions shall be in effect:

“School of Law Admission Scholarship for the Master of Laws Program” shall be the name of the scholarship.

2. In 2022–2023, there may be a maximum of 3 scholarships, each worth HK$30,000. The Scholarship must be used to pay for all direct university tuition costs.

3. The selection of beneficiaries will be based on taking into account pertinent aspects, notably the applicants’ academic accomplishments. Interview invitations may be extended to applicants.

4. CityU School of Law has complete discretion over the number of scholarships offered and how they are distributed each year.

5. A winner of the Scholarship is required to:

a) accept an admissions offer, register for the LLM program by paying all necessary fees, and begin studying in Semester A of the specified academic year; and

b) Enroll in at least 6 credit units of coursework in Semester A of the applicable academic year; and

c) Keep up a good academic standing throughout the LLM program’s study period, complete the program, and earn an LLM degree within the allotted study time.

6. Any recipient who violates any of the requirements outlined in Regulation 5 will have the Scholarship taken away from them. A recipient who violates Regulation 5 may also be required by CityU School of Law to repay the Scholarship in full to the Law School.
