THE DAVID KNAPP SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Students at UMass Boston have the opportunity to gain valuable in-school experience through internships, clinical, and other career-related placements thanks to the university’s diverse student body, connections to employers in fields like finance, health care, technology, service, and education, and its location in a significant U.S. city.

For urban public universities, the University of Massachusetts Boston is hailed as a national model of excellence. The John F. Kennedy Library and Presidential Museum, the Commonwealth Museum and Massachusetts State Archives, and the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate are all close to the picturesque waterfront site, which has easy access to downtown Boston.

UMass Boston, a member of the UMass system, combines a small-college atmosphere with the extensive resources of a sizable research university. With a 16:1 student-to-faculty ratio, interactions between students and professors are simple because the majority of instruction takes place in small classes. In their fields, 93% of full-time faculty members have earned the highest degree.

With 15,989 undergraduate and graduate students, UMass Boston has a student body that is a testament to its academic quality. The university’s nine colleges and schools offered 114 graduate programs (master’s degrees, doctoral degrees, graduate certificates, CAGS, and post-certificates) master’s and 79 undergraduate programs (bachelor’s degrees, undergraduate certificates, and post-baccalaureate certificates) in the fall of 2019. 692 students who thrive on intellectual challenges attend the Honors College. Richer courses delve further into the theory or explore more applications.

Vibrant campus life is provided by more than 100 student groups, including clubs, literary publications, newspapers, radio stations, art galleries, and 16 NCAA Division III sports teams. Students enjoy the wealth of services, cultural attractions, and educational possibilities that make Greater Boston the biggest and best college town in the country while residing throughout the city and in apartment complexes only steps from the campus.

DAVID C. KNAPP

David C. Knapp, a former political scientist and president of the University of Massachusetts who desired to advance the study of politics and public affairs, is honored by having his name associated with this scholarship.

ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP

The David C. Knapp Scholarship is given to students in recognition of their exceptional academic achievement, but it also takes into account other aspects such as background information, aspirations for the future, and community and public service.

BUDGET FOR AWARD

Two awards totaling $2,508.50. Depending on the caliber of the applicant pool, either one candidate will receive the entire award or it will be split among several candidates.

ELIGIBILITY

3 UMB political science courses must be finished by December 31, 2022. 30 – 105 credits earned at UMB by December 31, 2022

APPLICATION SUPPLEMENTS

  • A copy of your most recent UMB transcript, official or unofficial
  • A resume
  • A 500–600 word essay outlining one of the following: (1) a political issue you care deeply about and the value you see in understanding it from a Political Science perspective; or (2) a public or community service you have performed or would like to perform and the value you see in it from a Political Science, as well as personal, point of view.
