UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA

The University of California, Los Angeles is a public research institution located in Los Angeles, California (UCLA). When UCLA was established as a teacher’s college in 1881 as the southern division of the California State Normal School (now San José State University), its academic roots were laid. The Southern Branch of the University of California was integrated into UCLA in 1919, making this institution the second-oldest of the ten-campus University of California system (after UC Berkeley).

The 337 undergraduate and graduate degree programs at UCLA, which provide degrees in a wide range of academic subjects, are home to about 31,600 undergraduate students and 14,300 graduate and professional students. With 168,000 undergraduate applicants, including transfers, UCLA received the most applications of any university in the nation for the upcoming fall semester.

The university’s organizational structure is made up of 12 professional schools and the College of Letters and Science. The six colleges that offer undergraduate degree programs are the Herb Alpert School of Music, School of Nursing, Luskin School of Government Affairs, and School of Theater, Film, and Television. The Samueli School of Engineering and the School of Arts and Architecture make up the other two institutions. Three further graduate-level institutions for professional health sciences are the Fielding School of Public Health, the School of Dentistry, and the David Geffen School of Medicine. Reliable college and university rankings frequently place UCLA, one of the country’s Public Ivies, among the best colleges in the world. As of October 2021, UCLA faculty, researchers, or graduates included 27 Nobel laureates, five Turing Prize winners, two U.S. Air Force Chief Scientists, and one Fields Medalist. 167 members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, 32 representatives from the National Academy of Engineering, 41 from the National Academy of Medicine, and 55 from the National Academy of Sciences make up the current faculty.
