SCHOLARSHIP SPONSOR

SAVANNAH COLLEGE OF ART AND DESIGN (SCAD)

The private, nonprofit Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) has campuses in Savannah, Georgia; Atlanta, Georgia; and Lacoste, France.

The university, which was established in 1978 to offer degrees in fields not yet available in the Southeast of the United States, today has two facilities in Georgia, an online degree program, and a study abroad location in Lacoste, France. More than 14,000 students from all over the United States and the rest of the world are enrolled at the university, making up as much as 17% of the total student body. [3] SCAD has earned accreditation from the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as well as from other reputable agencies.

On September 29, 1978, Savannah College of Art and Design was formally formed by Richard G. Rowan, Paula S. Wallace, and May L. Poetter, and Paul E. Poetter. The institution first started conducting lessons in September 1979 with 71 students, seven faculty members, and four staff members. Ceramics, graphic design, historic preservation, textile design, interior design, painting, photography, and printing were the first eight degrees that the school offered. The first graduate obtained their diploma in May 1981. The first graduating class obtained their degrees the following year. More than 500 students were enrolled by 1982, followed by 1,000 in 1986 and 2,000 in 1989. More than 11,000 students were enrolled at the university in 2014.

School administrators became alarmed when a spate of staff suicides occurred in the late 1980s and early 1990s. A rival art school opened up in the city as a result of the discontent, starting a “all-out fight.”

Early in the 1990s, there was increased agitation among students regarding their representation in the institution. This unrest culminated in 1992 with the explosion of two explosive devices at the Savannah Civic Center and one at the administration building.

In order to offer programs for the many academic areas offered by the university’s degree-granting locations, SCAD created a study abroad location in Lacoste, France, in 2002. In 2003, it introduced an online curriculum that U.S. News and World Report consider to be one of the best bachelor’s programs in the country. The university established a branch in Midtown Atlanta in 2005, and in 2006 it amalgamated with the Atlanta College of Art. In the Sham Shui Po neighborhood of Hong Kong, SCAD launched a location in September 2010.

ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP

The Frances Larkin McCommon Scholarship is awarded to students who portray great artistic and extracurricular accomplishments, including leadership, volunteerism, community service, other involvement, and academic success.

Based on their demonstrated academic and/or extracurricular success, including leadership, volunteerism, community service or involvement, and artistic skill, incoming students may be given a scholarship or other award from SCAD. Both Americans and non-Americans can apply for scholarships. As part of their admissions application, students who want to be considered for achievement scholarships could be asked to submit additional materials.

For need-based scholarships and awards, financial need, as demonstrated by filing the FAFSA or other documents, is also taken into account.

If eligible, recipients may take extra financial aid in the form of additional scholarships and awards from different sources.

CRITERIA FOR SCHOLARSHIP APPLICANTS

Candidates must exhibit exceptional artistic achievement in order to be considered, and they typically rank in the top 3% of the candidate pool.

SCHOLARSHIP WORTH

The winner must continue to be enrolled, make a constructive contribution to the university community, and maintain a GPA of at least 3.0 in order for this award to be renewed each year until the completion of a bachelor’s degree (or up to 225 attempted hours).

GUIDE FOR SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS

Eligible applicants are frequently requested to provide supplementary resources as part of their admissions application, depending on the qualities of their application package.

The Frances Larkin McCommon Scholarship is highly selective and will be given to the candidates who meet the requirements at the earliest.

QUARTERLY AND YEARLY PRIZES

As long as the recipient continues to be enrolled, makes a positive contribution to the university community, and maintains a GPA of at least 3.0, the majority of undergraduate scholarships are granted to degree-seeking students and are renewed and applied quarterly throughout the completion of a degree program (or up to 225 attempted hours for undergraduate students). Students who are eligible for multiple scholarships may earn a combined amount up to the tuition cost. A success adviser should be consulted by students who intend to double major or pursue several minors to ascertain whether their financial aid will be adequate.

Graduate awards are available to degree-seeking students and are extended and applied on a quarterly basis until a graduate degree is completed at SCAD, provided the recipient continues enrolled at SCAD, contributes favorably to the university community, and keeps a GPA average of at least 3.25.

It is the intention of SCAD’s annual prizes for graduate and undergraduate students to be distributed across the 45 hours of credit taken over three quarters.
