Gallaudet University

In Washington, D.C., there is a private research university called Gallaudet University. Established as a grammar school for children who were blind and deaf in 1864, It is a school for deaf and hard of hearing students. When it comes to National Universities, the university is rated 127th.

Gallaudet University received government funding in 1864 after President Abraham Lincoln signed the charter bill into law, which allowed us to hold our first commencement in 1869 with none other than President Ulysses S. Grant in attendance.

Linguistics in ASL

The study of ASL linguistics was founded as a result of the research of Gallaudet University English professor William Stokoe and two Deaf student researchers, thus acknowledging ASL as a language.

Increasing Our Horizon

President Lyndon B. Johnson signed an act establishing the Model Secondary School for the Deaf shortly after our 100th anniversary (MSSD). Gallaudet was able to become a K-PhD institution for the Deaf after President Richard Nixon authorized the Kendall Demonstration Elementary School (KDES) charter a year later.

A campus movement attracted international attention in 1988. A battle for deaf leadership that first resulted in the nomination of the university’s first Deaf president revolutionized and empowered the deaf community.

Next Chapter for Us

We’ve grown and changed from a meager twelve students in 1857 to 1,500 in 2020. In the hands of our students, the next chapter of Gallaudet’s history will be written.
