The Government Of Canada Scholarship Program

In order to help international applicants who want to study, do research, or advance their careers in Canada temporarily, the government of Canada administers a number of scholarship programs. Eligibility

Candidates should know the following:

• Written institutional collaboration and student exchange agreements or memoranda of understanding between the Canadian institution and the candidate’s home institution are preferred but not required for undergraduate applications for a research-based experience. You will need to submit a Letter of Invitation from the professor at the University of Alberta who has agreed to supervise you in place of an agreement.

• While not required, an inter-institutional agreement is ideally suited for graduate applications.

• Students applying must already be enrolled full-time in the degree program they wish to pursue. For instance, the student will regrettably not be considered eligible for the scholarship year of 2022–2023 if the application period falls between the student’s enrollment in the Master’s and Ph.D. programs. CBIE advises applying the following year if this describes you.

• Scholarships have a set duration and are not re-renewed.

• Candidates who have never previously been awarded a scholarship through a scholarship program run by Global Affairs Canada will be given preference.

• Neither the Canadian institution giving the scholarship nor the recipient is subject to tax on it.

• Must already be fluent in either English or French, the language of instruction at the Canadian institution, as the scholarship does not cover language study.

What To Do

Before searching for a host professor or supervisor, prospective recipients of the Government of Canada Scholarships 2023–2024 at the University of Alberta must first confirm that they meet the requirements for the scholarship. Send the following information to professors with whom you might like to collaborate via email.

Send the following information via email to professors you might want to collaborate with:

• contact information and your full name

• Your country of origin and home university

• Whether you are currently enrolled as a graduate (master’s or doctoral) or undergraduate (bachelor’s) student.

• The year you are currently in your degree program.

• The precise title of the scholarship program you intend to apply for

• How long do you intend to spend researching? (4 months, 5-6 months, 8 months)

• Your preferred start date (must finish no later than February 1 each year)

• Records such as your resume or curriculum vitae, academic transcripts from college, and/or a cover letter

• A connection to the host supervisors’ contact details

Once the candidate for a research internship has identified a potential host supervisor, they will collaborate with that supervisor and their home institution (not the University of Alberta) to gather the necessary supporting documents, which will then be submitted along with the Electronic Application form.
