Simmons University

John Simmons, a Boston businessman, had a radical concept decades before women in America won the right to vote: that women should be able to support themselves independently and lead fulfilling lives. This same attitude of inclusion and empowerment made Simmons one of the only private colleges that did not impose Jewish student admission quotas during the first half of the 20th century, producing the first African-American Simmons graduate in 1914.

Since 1899, Simmons has provided female undergraduate students with a cutting-edge liberal arts education that is combined with professional work experience. Today, Simmons also offers the many advantages of a small university, such as renowned coed graduate programs in social work, education, liberal arts, library science, and health sciences.

Since all three strategies are required for success, a Simmons education has combined professional development, intellectual exploration, and community orientation for more than 100 years. At Simmons, we value each individual’s unique identity, taking into account their race, class, ethnicity, and sexual orientation. Our curriculum, affiliated organizations, and community partnerships all reflect this.
