 Leiden Institution

Located in Leiden, the Netherlands, the Leiden Institution is a public research institution (abbreviated as LEI; Dutch: Universiteit Leiden). William, Prince of Orange established the university as a Protestant school of higher study in 1575 as a token of gratitude to the city of Leiden for its protection from Spanish raids throughout the Eighty Years’ War. In addition, it is the oldest and best-known higher education facility in both Europe and the Netherlands.

During the Dutch Golden Age, when scholars from all over Europe were lured to the Dutch Republic because of its intellectually open climate and Leiden’s international fame, the institution rose to prominence. The historical foundations of Leiden and its emphasis on social sciences are well-known. During this time, Leiden was home to René Descartes, Rembrandt, Christiaan Huygens, Hugo Grotius, Baruch Spinoza, and Baron d’Holbach.

More than 40 national and international research institutions, seven academic colleges, and more than fifty subject departments are located at the university. The university’s historical main campus is made up of buildings scattered across the college town of Leiden, while a second campus, located in The Hague, is home to a liberal arts college and several of its faculties. It is a founding member of the Europaeum, the Coimbra Group, and the League of European Research Universities.

Leiden University was ranked in the top 50 globally in thirteen academic disciplines, including politics, archaeology, anthropology, history, pharmacology, law, public policy, public administration, religious studies, arts & humanities, linguistics, modern languages, and sociology, in the 2020 QS World University Rankings. The school is frequently rated as one of the best in the world. In the 2022 ShanghaiRanking Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, public administration is ranked third in the world. It is also ranked 12th in medical technology, 22nd in pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences, 40th in political sciences, and 49th in library and information science.

The university has also produced sixteen Nobel laureates and twenty-six Spinoza Prize winners in addition to Enrico Fermi and Albert Einstein. The Dutch royal family is strongly associated with Queen Juliana, Queen Beatrix, and King Willem-Alexander as former pupils. Ten Dutch prime ministers, including the present president Mark Rutte, are also former students. A US president, two NATO secretaries-general, the president of the International Court of Justice, and a British prime minister are all connected to Leiden University.

About The Scholarship

The LUF-SVM Scholarship was established by SVM to support students with innovative, unexpected, and exceptional insights related to the topic of packaging and the environment as well as to give students a platform for their ideas about striking the right balance between consumer convenience and environmental footprint.

The Foundation for Packaging and the Environment (SVM) and the Leiden University Fund (LUF) are offering eight scholarships for master’s thesis projects that deal with the subject of “packaging and the environment” and include innovative ideas and high-impact project proposals. Examples of applications that are more consumer-friendly and have a limited environmental impact include innovative packaging design, packaging prevention, new or alternative types of reprocessing, and/or inventive ideas for the waste phase. Simply put: Think creatively!
