The Merit Scholarship From Birmigham University

We may go back to the five separate colleges that made up The City of Birmingham Polytechnic in 1971 to learn more about our early past.

Birmingham Government School of Design

The Birmingham Society of Artists established the Birmingham Government School of Design in October 1843, which is when Birmingham College of Art had its start. The school changed its name to Birmingham College of Art in 1884, and it relocated to a stunning John Chamberlain-designed purpose-built Venetian Gothic structure on Margaret Street. Margaret Street, where our Department of Art is still located, is a Grade I Listed Building today.

The Birmingham School of Jewellery, which had its headquarters in Ellen Street, joined the College of Art in 1888. Two years later, a brand-new structure in Vittoria Street was inaugurated, serving as the School’s residence ever since.

The School of Architecture was founded as part of the College of Art in 1909 and received recognition from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) in 1923 and 1930 to become one of the top architecture schools in the UK. The School rose to prominence within the Faculty of the Built Environment upon admission to the Polytechnic.

Around 1859, the Birmingham and Midland Institute founded the Birmingham School of Music as a division. HM, The Queen Mother opened the first part of the current Paradise Circus structure in 1973.

Early in the 20th century, Birmingham College of Commerce was founded as a division of Birmingham Central Technical College (CTC), with its main campus located on Edmund Street. At Gosta Green, HM officially opened a new CTC. The College of Commerce relocated there in the early 1960s after The Queen in 1955. The CTC’s technology departments evolved into the first College of Advanced Technology in the UK in 1961, and Aston University was founded there in 1966. However, the College of Commerce remained independent before joining the Polytechnic.

Bristol Road saw the opening of South Birmingham Technical College in 1961. Early in the 1970s, the College’s departments relocated to new structures in Perry Barr. Bournville College of Further Education eventually took over the South Birmingham location, which it held until 2011.
