SCHOLARSHIP SPONSOR

R&D SYSTEMS

The parent firm of R&D Systems, Techne Corporation, declared on February 10, 2014, that it would start doing business as Bio-Techne. R&D Systems, BiosPacific, Tocris Biosciences, Boston Biochem, and Bionostics goods will all be marketed under the same label thanks to the adoption of Bio-Techne. Visit bio-techne.com for more details on Bio-Techne.

Hematology controllers and calibrators were initially produced by R&D Systems, a Minnesota-based manufacturer of biological goods, for use in hospitals and clinics. We released our first product, a platelet-rich plasma control, in 1977, and we were the second manufacturer to offer a whole blood control with platelets in the world in 1981. R&D Systems Hematological has persisted in creating numerous hematology controls over the years. These goods are still offered by our Clinical Controls Division.

We were the first firm in the world to commercially generate TGF-beta 1 when we introduced our initial research reagent in 1985, making us the industry pioneers. The extracellular signaling molecule TGF-beta 1 is generated by a variety of cell types. It plays a role in immune system operation, cell division, and cell proliferation. We isolated a number of additional cytokines from natural sources after the launching of this product and made them available to the research market. Cytokines are specialized proteins that mediate cell-to-cell communication, and they are of great interest to biomedical researchers. They perform a wide range of biological functions, including directing the immune response and controlling developmental processes. Additionally, cytokine activity that is out of control has been related to a variety of illnesses, including cancer, heart disease, and inflammatory conditions.

We established the Growth Factor (formerly known as Biotechnology) Division in 1985 with the intention of creating and distributing a broad spectrum of human cytokines through genetic engineering, encouraged by our success in the cytokine industry. In comparison to the extraction of these proteins from natural sources, recombinant DNA technology has a number of benefits, including lower production costs and potentially limitless supply. The Biotechnology Division started producing monoclonal and polyclonal anti-cytokine antibodies in 1989, and in 1990, we produced our first ELISA kit.
