Swansea University

It is an excellent opportunity to join the Zienkiewicz Centre for Computational Engineering (ZCCE) at Swansea University, which is renowned for its breakthrough work in computational modeling and engineering applications. The Faculty of Science & Engineering’s research environment was rated as being over 93% world-leading or internationally good in the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021. The project’s goal is to provide PhD students with a top-notch, rigorous research education through cooperative research.

To reach its aim of zero emissions, the aircraft industry has chosen hydrogen as the propulsion fuel. The usage of cryogenic hydrogen is considered to be the most viable option. Technical difficulties including flashback and flame instability make the stable combustion of cryogenic hydrogens difficult. Building robust and reliable forecasting tools is urgently required to support the challenging and expensive experimental research, which is driven by complex physics combining cryogenic jets, high heat and mass transfer, phase shift, multiphase flow, ignition, and flame.

The project’s objectives are to develop state-of-the-art modeling techniques based on the internal high-fidelity simulation code currently used for the multiphase reactive flow of cryogenic hydrogen and to collect data from numerical simulations that can be used to analyze physicochemical processes in order to learn more about this relatively new scientific field. Methods for hydrogen injection, effective mixing, and stable operation will be developed under suitable operating conditions. The study’s objective is to construct a theoretical foundation for the operational principles of the hydrogen combustion system.

The individual in the position will gain experience in:

• Computational fluid mechanics, which makes use of advanced numerical modeling and simulation techniques;

• Analytical techniques, turbulent combustion theory, and multiphase flow theory;

• Development and application of highly accurate numerical models;

• A method for obtaining aviation that is net-zero.

• taking part in cross-disciplinary teams.

The selected candidate will also need to publish publications to esteemed journals and present their work at key international conferences.
