The Waterloo Butterfly Scholarship Program

Applications are being accepted for the University of Waterloo Graduate Scholarship Canada from qualified applicants. Both domestic and foreign students may submit an application for this program. The grant is open to master’s and PhD level programs in any of the University of Waterloo’s subject areas. As of the deadline, interested candidates may submit an application for the scholarship. Open Subjects offered and Degree Programs under the University of Waterloo Graduate Scholarship Canada University of Waterloo provided funding.

About The Scholarship

Graduate students enrolled full-time in a Master’s or Doctoral program at the University of Waterloo are eligible to apply for the University of Waterloo Graduate Scholarship, which is typically worth $1,000 per term for up to three terms. Students must meet the time requirements of their graduate program and have a minimum first-class (80%) cumulative average in their current program or over the previous two full academic years. Graduate departments will automatically propose qualified students depending on their funding allotment; there is no need to submit an application.

Promoter Value

Typically, there is a minimum of $1,000 each term for a maximum of three terms (value and duration may vary, depending on other funding the student may be receiving).

Eligibility Criteria

• Graduate students from home countries and abroad who are enrolled full-time in Masters or Doctoral programs.

• Completion of the present program or two previous full academic years with a minimum first-class (80%) cumulative average is required.

• Must fit within the program’s time constraints.

• No registration is necessary. Depending on their funding allotment, departments will automatically nominate students.

Linguistic proficiency in English (ELP)

English is the primary language of instruction at the University of Waterloo. It is our duty to guarantee that every student has the English language proficiency needed for success.

Licensed ELP exams

• The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) on the internet

The necessary scores must be obtained in a single test; we do not accept TOEFL MyBestTM results to satisfy the ELP requirement.

• International English Language Testing System (academic)

• C2 Proficiency or C1 Advanced

Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL)

• Pearson Test of English (academic)

• English for Academic Success (EFAS)

It Is Crucial To Understand

• Two years following the test date, ELP results are still valid.

• For more on the prerequisites for the ELP program, visit our program pages.

• Letters from your university declaring that English is the primary language of instruction do not meet Waterloo’s entrance requirements.

• To ensure that your exam results reach us in time, complete your test at least two months before the application deadline. Your test results will not arrive in Waterloo for 4-6 weeks.

Conditional admission for English language proficiency

• Conditional admission might be made available if you’re applying to a graduate school, provided an ELP test, but your results fell just short of the needed mark.

• Conditional admission can be available if you’re applying with a sponsor that offers money for English language training.

Exceptions for ELP

If any one of the following is true at the time of your Waterloo application, you are exempt from submitting your English language proficiency test results:

1. You have three or more years of post-secondary education under your belt from a Canadian college or university.

2. A Canadian university awarded you a graduate degree.

3. You have earned a graduate degree or three or more years of postsecondary study in one of the exempt nations listed.

4. You have worked in one of the nations listed below for at least three years in a position where English was the primary language of communication.

5. The International Association of Universities World Higher Education Database lists English as the only language of instruction at a university where you have completed three or more years of post-secondary education or a graduate degree (WHED).

1. Keep in mind that a WHED institution’s ELP exemption is only valid for two years after graduation.
