The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship Program

About The Scholarship

The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships award (Vanier CGS) was created in order to draw in and retain excellent Ph.D. candidates and to position Canada as a global center of excellence in research and higher education. The scholarships are for doctoral study, or for degrees combining an MD or MA with a Ph.D.

Hosting institution(s):

Canadian universities receive support from Vanier CGS. Only the Canadian institution that met the requirements and filed the nomination is eligible to receive the Vanier CGS.

Level of study and field(s)

There are Ph.D. programs in the scientific sciences, engineering, social sciences, and/or humanities, as well as combined MA/Ph.D. and MD/Ph.D. programs.

A significant research component that results in the completion of a thesis, major research project, dissertation, scholarly publication, performance, recital, and/or exhibit that has been merit/expert-reviewed at the institutional level is a requirement for completion of an eligible doctoral program.

Clinically oriented programs of study, such as clinical psychology, and joint graduate research programs with a professional degree (for example, MD/Ph.D., DVM/Ph.D., JD/Ph.D.), are also suitable programs if they have a large autonomous research component, as noted above.

Total prizes Of The Award

Up to 166 scholarships may be awarded each year.

Target

Foreign nationals, Canadian citizens, and permanent residents are all eligible to apply for a Vanier CGS.

Scholarship size and duration:

The scholarships are worth $50,000 apiece over a three-year period.

Eligibility

To qualify for a Vanier CGS, you must:

Just one Canadian institution may submit proposals, and that institution must have fulfilled the Vanier CGS quota;

• be enrolled in your first doctoral program (this includes MD/Ph.D., DVM/Ph.D., and JD/PhD programs if they have a major and established research component). Keep in mind that only the Ph.D. element of combined degrees is eligible for financing

• have plans to enroll in full-time Ph.D. study and research at the school that nominated them during the summer semester or the academic year that follows the release of the results; Keep in mind that only the Ph.D. element of combined degrees is eligible for financing;

They have no more than 20 months left in their doctoral program as of May 1, 2023.

They will have completed no more than 32 months of their Ph.D. program by May 1, 2023, if:

o Enrolled in a collaborative graduate research program for a Ph.D., MD, MA, or DVM. Applicants who fall under this group are still qualified for the 32-month window, whether or not they have previously been enrolled in a Master’s program; went directly from a Bachelor’s to a Ph.D. without spending any time in a Master’s program, or obtained a master’s degree before enrolling in a doctoral program, or vice versa.

Your institution requires that you have successfully finished your most recent two years of full-time study, or its equivalent, with a first-class average. Candidates are asked to contact the school to find out what a first-class average entails; and

• Must not hold a doctoral-level scholarship or fellowship from CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC while seeking a doctorate or having already earned one.

Application Recommendations

Candidates must have a spot allocated for them at a Canadian institution to receive their recommendation. The Vanier CGS program does not accept direct applicants.

An application can be launched in one of two ways. Either the student tells the faculty of graduate studies at the selected school of their intention to do so OR the institution contacts the intended applicant to start the nomination process for the Vanier CGS program.

The application is created by the student via the ResearchNet application system, and it is then delivered by the internal deadline to the institution that is nominating them. The suggested nominations are then sent to the Vanier-Banting Secretariat (the Secretariat) before 1 November 2022.
